Ep. 544: The Windmill Myth
Guest: David Blackmon
In British Columbia, nine new windmill projects designed to last 30 years and deliver 5,000 gigawatt hours of electricity annually have been given the green light. The projects are being built on First Nations land.
In an effort to speed construction, the province has exempted the projects from environmental assessments. BC Conservative Party leader John Rustad believes that waiving the assessments of the projects is work that “people need to have a full understanding of [and] what the impact of these wind projects are on the environment.”
Windmills are often seen as symbols of clean energy and sustainability, but is there more to the story? Are they as efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically viable as we’re led to believe?
We invited David Blackmon, an expert in energy and infrastructure, to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the reality of windmills, their power generation capabilities and their environmental impact.
