Ep. 006: Are tankers safe in BC Waters?

Guest: Kevin Obermeyer, CEO of Pacific Pilotage Authority

Stringent qualifications are required to be a ship's pilot and and there are strict protocols when it comes to oil.

Kevin Obermeyer, CEO of Pacific Pilotage Authority Canada, says oil has been shipped on the coast of BC for more than 50 years without incident. He points out that in the years since the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, the tanker industry has been transformed and now has a stellar safety record globally.

Shipping in the waters off the coast of British Columbia is an industry Obermeyer contends can and will done safely thanks in large part to the expertise of the Pilots at the helm.
