Ep. 004: Impact of Declining Voter Turnout

Guest: Mario Canseco, Insights West

There is a declining voter turnout in Elections in Canada and, in particular, at the Municipal level.

Mario Canseco of Insights West contends there are myriad issues at play that include, but are not limited to, a lack of coverage by media about local politics. He acknowledges the resources within journalism have dwindled and City Hall just isn’t being covered the way it used to be. Add to that a perception that your vote doesn’t count, that politicians can’t be trusted and that you can’t fight City Hall. It adds up to an abysmal 30% turnout on election day.

Canseco points out even worse is declining candidate turnout, the number of cities and municipalities that see incumbents running uncontested continues to rise.
